Computer stuff that I don't know but you probably do September 1st, 2009, 2:13 pm
So I'm allowed to use my neighbors wireless internet for free. The only problem is that my computer is too far away and can't pick up the signal. Is their some sort of wireless relay thing that I could get and put between my room and my neighbors to get the signal and send it on? (If not you guys should invent it, because thats a good idea.) Any other ideas?
Also, my computer is insanely loud, it sounds like a vacuum cleaner when I turn it on. I've opened it up and dusted the insides so they're all clean but that didn't help at all. Are there any other options, or is my computer just old and crappy?
Because of the extremely loud computer I'm thinking of getting a laptop. Before I start shopping around does anyone have any suggestions or good info to give me. All I use my computer for is the internet, microsoft word, and sometimes watching a movie, and I don't want an apple, if any of that info is useful.

how far away (in feet) is your neighboor's house? how many walls do you have to go through before your signal gets to the router?
Unfortulately computer wireless networks are affected by quite a bit and getting a huge honkin antenna can only do you so much good if it is at the edge of it's usable range.
is the wireless card in your computer a USB stick or a card that is installed with screwdriver?
is your computer on the desk or under it?
sorry for the questions but diagnosing wireless networks involves quite a few factors.
as far as the noise from your computer it could be an old fan or something similar not working anymore. does it sound like a rattling fan or like all the fans are spinning as fast as they can all the time?
